Communicating with a person of the opposite sex baffles many people. Sometimes it may seem to us that our partner is from another planet - and it is not just different interests, but also different ways of expressing our thoughts. And needless to say that the problem becomes deeper in communicating with a person of a different nationality. In this block, I will discourse of how to behave properly with a foreign girl.
The first and quite obvious difficulty that arises when contacting a foreign woman is language. Even if the two of you are quite good in English, sometimes it is still very difficult to express your knotty thoughts. The advice is simple - do not try to speak a non-mother tongue, like your native language. Speak simple phrases. Avoid proverbs and folk sayings. Use jokes only if you are 100% sure that your joke will be understood correctly. Of course, it greatly impoverishes your conversation, but in either event it will be clear.
When communicating, we often use gestures. This helps us to give our communication some kind of vividness and to emphasize what exactly we want to say. But you should be careful, because in another country gestures may mean something different than in yours. For example, the familiar nod of your head, meaning “yes”, will be regarded exactly the opposite in India, Greece and Bulgaria. And so, for example, you should not expect a girl to keep a date, if she nodded at your offer to meet and she is Greek. And also if answering the question “how are you” you will show this Greek lady a finger up, meaning that everything is fine, she is likely to be offended because in her homeland this gesture means “Shut up!” I strongly recommend you to learn more about the gestures of the country your girl is from, as well as their meaning before starting the communication.
I can give the same piece of advice regarding the distance between people. For example, people from warm countries (Spanish, Italian and French) can keep quite close to the person they are talking to. There is no point to regard this as a desire to proceed to the next stage of relations, it’s just that these nations have a small distance between people. At the same time, if you get closer than a meter to Finns, Englishmen or Swedes, you can be mistaken for a harasser. They even say about the Finns that while walking and talking with each other, the Finns keep such a distance that a person can walk with ease between them.
As the saying runs, the farther into the forest, the thicker the trees. Let's say you have met a girl from another country, become an item, understood a little about her national cuisine and learned where her hometown is. And then you decide to live together, and possibly to get married. At this stage it is necessary to understand clearly whether you have common values and ideas about the most important issues. For example, whether it is necessary to live together with the parents in her country or whether it is possible for her to require from your son to wear a skirt and from the daughter to wear a headscarf. It is clear that you can grin and bear with some cultural make-up (such as to eat with chopsticks or to sit on the floor). But some may seem absolutely unacceptable to you - like open relations after marriage or polyandry ...
But communication with foreign ladies brings not only difficulties and worries, it is also an opportunity to understand and accept a different world, a different style of thinking, a different culture, and to broaden the circle of your ideas and knowledge. Without leaving your own city, you can find out how people live hundreds of kilometers away from you, wonder how they do ordinary things, what is valuable for them, what makes them happy and upset. And if you decide to marry a foreign girl, then you should also know that the most beautiful and gifted children are born in mixed marriages.
